Optimizing Procurement with ERP

Optimizing Procurement with ERP 150 150 Shakir Haq

In the food industry, procurement is more than just buying ingredients; it’s the “first point of profit.” At NKP Empire, we’ve learned that an efficient procurement strategy not only keeps costs in check but also lays the foundation for delivering consistent quality across our offerings. With the help of an advanced enterprise resource planning (ERP) system, we’ve refined our procurement processes, creating a robust, data-driven approach to sourcing.

When I say ERP, I’m not just referring to software; I’m talking about a transformative tool that provides real-time insights into our supply chain. From analyzing supplier performance to forecasting demand, ERP allows us to make informed decisions swiftly. For instance, when prices for palm oil skyrocketed in recent years, our ERP system helped us quickly identify cost-effective purchasing options and bulk-buy directly from manufacturers. As a result, we maintained stable costs for our customers, even amidst market volatility.

But ERP’s role goes beyond cost savings—it’s instrumental in upholding our commitment to quality. By tracking the quality and consistency of ingredients from suppliers, we’re able to ensure that every product meets our high standards. This is crucial as we source from both local and international suppliers to keep up with the unique demands of our diverse product lines. By centralizing all this information, ERP gives us a bird’s-eye view of the entire procurement cycle, helping us address potential challenges before they become costly problems.

ERP also supports our sustainability initiatives by minimizing waste. With precise demand forecasting, we can avoid over-ordering and reduce spoilage, benefiting both our bottom line and the environment. It’s about using technology to align our operations with our values.

ERP has also shown remarkable impact in our planning for seasonal and regional fluctuations. In a world where demand can vary significantly between regions or even between seasons, ERP allows us to adapt our sourcing strategy to meet customer expectations effectively. We can be agile without sacrificing quality, something that is essential as we expand our operations and cater to an increasingly diverse customer base.

Investing in ERP has been about more than keeping our operations efficient; it’s about maintaining the trust of our customers and creating a resilient business model. In a complex and ever-changing food industry, procurement backed by technology is not just smart—it’s indispensable. This “first point of profit” approach ensures that NKP Empire is equipped to face the future, ready to serve our customers with consistency, transparency, and innovation.

The Global Food Supply Chain – Challenges and Innovations

The Global Food Supply Chain – Challenges and Innovations 150 150 Shakir Haq

The global food supply chain is both a marvel and a challenge, with vast networks spanning continents, navigating fluctuating demands, climate impacts, and geopolitical uncertainties. In recent years, we’ve witnessed how even slight disruptions can ripple through the industry, affecting pricing, availability, and ultimately, the choices available to consumers. I believe that adapting to these changes isn’t merely about managing obstacles; it’s about transforming challenges into opportunities.

One example of this fragility was a significant price surge in raw cacao, impacting the global chocolate industry. At a recent C-Suite event, I listened to a chocolatier share their journey of shifting to locally sourced cacao from regions like Chikmagalur, Karnataka. By turning to local suppliers, they not only stabilized costs but also supported the growth of domestic cacao farms—a solution that benefits all levels of the supply chain. At NKP Empire, we see similar opportunities in food production: when global supplies fluctuate, local sourcing can mitigate the pressure.

Consider palm oil, a staple in our kitchens. When geopolitical tensions affected crude palm oil prices in 2022, we didn’t pass that burden to our customers. Instead, we pivoted, buying in bulk and establishing direct relationships with manufacturers, ensuring we could sustain operations at manageable costs. Unlike other players, our scale allowed us to avoid passing extra costs on to the end consumer, thanks to these strategic partnerships.

Such efforts underscore the vital role of healthy manufacturer relationships. Working closely with our suppliers allows us to foresee potential disruptions and secure our supply chain well in advance. In an era when food production is vulnerable to unpredictable changes, fostering strong connections isn’t just good business—it’s essential to resilience.

Looking to the future, we are constantly innovating ways to maintain product quality and availability, even if we expand overseas. Preserving food items like exotic spices or delicate herbs in their original state without relying on preservatives is crucial to maintaining quality. As we explore international markets, we’re developing auxiliary production units that ensure our IP remains secure while allowing us to maintain the high standards our customers expect.

Ultimately, navigating the global food supply chain demands agility, foresight, and a commitment to innovation. By leaning into local sourcing, building reliable relationships, and investing in technology, NKP Empire continues to adapt, ensuring that our customers enjoy the same trusted flavors, even as the world around us evolves.

How F&B Shapes the Tourism Landscape

How F&B Shapes the Tourism Landscape 150 150 Shakir Haq

The symbiotic relationship between food and tourism has always been a defining feature of many cultures around the world. As someone deeply rooted in the F&B industry, I’ve seen firsthand how the culinary landscape can shape a region’s identity, attract tourists, and create economic growth. It’s fascinating how food culture can act as the glue that ties together the local economy and tourism, creating a powerful force that benefits everyone involved.

Local Cuisine as a Reflection of History and Identity

Food is not just about sustenance; it’s a reflection of a region’s history, culture, and traditions. In Bangalore, for example, we’ve created what we proudly call the “Taste of Bangalore”. This is not just about serving traditional dishes; it’s about curating a culture that represents the region. Our food culture, which blends influences from various communities, tells a story of the city’s growth and diversity. This connection between food and identity is essential. Local cuisine can provide a tangible link to the past, offering visitors a taste of a city’s story.

And let’s not forget, the very concept of “F&B tourism” is beginning to gain traction globally. Bloggers are traveling the world just to experience authentic culinary experiences, sharing those moments with the world. It’s no longer just about visiting landmarks; people want to dive deep into a place’s food culture, as much as its history or architecture.

F&B Tourism: A Growing Trend

The growing trend of food-specific travel is undeniable. People are increasingly planning trips with the express purpose of sampling a destination’s food. This shift in travel priorities is opening up new opportunities for the F&B industry. Social media plays a massive role in this—what people post online often encourages others to seek out the same experiences. This trend is very much alive, and it’s clear that food has become an integral part of the tourism experience.

Even in a city like Bangalore, people from within South India and beyond are flocking here not just for its weather but to experience its diverse food culture. When food speaks to a region’s culture and history, it becomes a powerful marketing tool. And as more tourists flock to experience it, the economy benefits. This type of culinary tourism is a win-win for both the local economy and the F&B sector.

F&B as an Economic Driver

Imagine if more cities in India, like Bangalore, recognized F&B as a key component of tourism. The ripple effect would be significant—not just for restaurant owners but for surrounding businesses as well. F&B tourism can lead to higher foot traffic, increased demand for local products, and greater interest in nearby attractions. This type of growth can attract new businesses, enhance real estate value, and generate substantial revenue for local economies.

When a region’s culinary offerings are recognized globally, it can lead to higher levels of investment, more tourism dollars, and an overall boost in the city’s economic profile. For instance, if a restaurant in a city like Bangalore were to earn a prestigious recognition or accolade, it would bring in not just food lovers but global tourists as well, boosting the entire area’s appeal.

To say food plays a crucial role in shaping a region’s economic growth would be an understatement; after all we’re only beginning to scratch the surface of its full potential.

How Adaptability and Quick-Thinking have been the Drivers of Our Success

How Adaptability and Quick-Thinking have been the Drivers of Our Success 150 150 Shakir Haq

In the food business, challenges don’t announce themselves. They just appear. Over the years, we’ve built a system that allows us to respond quickly, adapt, and keep moving forward. It’s not just about having the right systems in place—it’s about how we’ve fostered an environment of continuous improvement, where everyone is ready to adapt when challenges arise.

Managing risk is something we’ve learned to take very seriously, and over time, we’ve built clear communication protocols that connect every department. We operate like a large corporation where our processes are tight and defined, giving us a strong foundation for when the unexpected happens. This includes rapid response teams trained to act swiftly on any issue, from quality control and safety hazards to larger operational challenges. For us, the goal isn’t rigid planning but being prepared to adapt quickly, keeping everything running smoothly and safely, no matter what comes our way.

One of the things we are proud of is our commitment to learning from every experience. Every challenge, every mistake, is an opportunity to improve. We don’t just celebrate our wins—we pay attention to where we’ve stumbled and make sure we come out stronger. Take, for example, we recently had an incident that led us to rethink security measures at one of our outlets. Instead of viewing it as a setback, we saw it as a chance to strengthen our processes, ensuring the safety of both our team and our customers. This culture of continuous improvement is deeply ingrained at NKP Empire—every challenge teaches us something new, and every lesson makes us stronger.

At the end of the day, it’s not about trying to control everything—it’s about being resilient, adaptable, and always learning. We don’t expect perfection, but we do expect to constantly innovate and aim for as close to as possible to perfection. That’s how we keep moving forward, together.

The Mindset & Strategy that drives our Ongoing Success

The Mindset & Strategy that drives our Ongoing Success 150 150 Shakir Haq

Running NKP Empire has been an incredible journey, one where I’ve come to realize that serving great food is only half the battle. It’s about staying prepared for everything that comes our way—from shifting regulations to sudden market changes, and everything in between. The challenges are real, but so are the solutions when we work together with the right people.

One of the things that has always set us apart is how closely we’re plugged into the pulse of the industry. Being active members of associations like the Bangalore Hotels Association, the National Restaurant Association, and the South India Hotels and Restaurants Association gives us a real-time window into what’s happening. These affiliations keep us informed, allowing us to be proactive when it comes to industry trends and regulatory changes. It’s not just about staying compliant—it’s about being prepared for what’s coming next.

But I’ll be honest—keeping up with shifting regulations is not a one-person job. We’ve built strong relationships with consultants who ensure we’re on top of things like food safety, labour laws, and environmental guidelines. These partnerships are invaluable. This also means we’re never caught off guard by new government rules. It’s like having early warning signals that help us pivot before challenges escalate.

In an industry that thrives on unpredictability, scenario planning has become second nature. We learned early on that having backup plans in place is not just smart—it’s essential. What happens if a product we use gets banned? What if extreme weather hits? COVID taught us a lot in this area. We’ve built a culture where we anticipate the “what-ifs” and put measures in place, whether it’s ensuring cash flow during tough times or keeping our supply chain steady despite disruptions.

Staying ahead has always been about being ready for what’s next, and that’s a mindset we hold close at NKP Empire.

Driving Innovation through People and Operational Excellence

Driving Innovation through People and Operational Excellence 150 150 Shakir Haq

As I reflect on our journey, it’s clear to me that growth doesn’t happen in isolation. It’s not just about implementing new systems or expanding operations—it’s about people. One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned over the years is that a company is only as strong as its people. And when people are empowered, engaged, and given opportunities to grow, the company grows with them.

Our approach has always been to nurture talent from within. Many of our employees have been with us for decades, and their loyalty and dedication are what make NKP Empire what it is today. Early on, we made the decision to focus more on employee development. We introduced training programs that go beyond business operations, including personal growth and leadership. We promote from within whenever possible because we believe in rewarding loyalty and encouraging long-term career growth.

These efforts have been instrumental in fostering a positive work environment that is centered around growth. Initiatives like our Empire Super League have helped bring a sense of camaraderie and healthy competition to our teams, pushing them to strive for excellence in everything they do.

Beyond people, another cornerstone of our growth has been our operational improvements. Two years ago, we redesigned our logistics system to ensure that none of our outlets experience shortages. This has been crucial as we’ve continued to scale and meet the growing demand across all our locations. By making thoughtful adjustments to how we manage our supply chain, we’ve been able to streamline processes while maintaining the high standards our customers expect from us.

The philosophy guiding us through this growth is simple: continuous improvement. Whether it’s in the back-end logistics or front-end customer experience, we’re always striving to do better. We don’t settle for good enough; we set our sights on excellence in everything we do. This mindset has allowed us to maintain a high level of consistency and quality across our operations, all while growing in a way that feels both sustainable and true to who we are.

Transforming Leadership for Long-Term Success: The Power of Decentralization

Transforming Leadership for Long-Term Success: The Power of Decentralization 150 150 Shakir Haq

When I took over as CEO of NKP Empire in 2018, my vision wasn’t just to manage the company, but to drive it toward continuous, sustainable growth. Having spent more than a decade at NKP Empire, I had firsthand experience of both our successes and the areas where we could improve. My goal was not to overhaul what was already working well, but to refine and innovate in ways that would build on our strong foundation.

One of the first significant changes we made was decentralizing decision-making. Up until then, our leadership structure was highly centralized, with major decisions being made at the top. While that approach had its benefits, I believed that empowering our teams at every level would better position us for growth. This wasn’t just about delegation; it was about fostering responsibility across departments. Our leaders are now empowered to make decisions within their own functions, and this autonomy has allowed us to move faster and more effectively, without layers of bureaucracy.

Of course, this shift wasn’t without its challenges. Decentralization required a cultural change, as it demanded a shift in mindset and operational habits. However, this was necessary to keep up with the growing pace of our business. Today, this structure allows us to be more agile, and our teams feel a greater sense of ownership in their roles. The collective decision-making process has been a key driver of our continued success.

By empowering our teams to take ownership of their areas, we’ve cultivated an environment where innovation can thrive, and decisions are made with agility. This structure not only makes us more efficient but also ensures that our growth is sustainable, with every part of the organization playing a crucial role in NKP Empire’s ongoing success.

Building Careers at NKP Empire: A Story of Growth and Opportunity

Building Careers at NKP Empire: A Story of Growth and Opportunity 150 150 Shakir Haq

At our core, we’ve always believed in people. From the days when my grandfather started this journey, it was never just about building a business; it was about building careers, creating opportunities, and making sure that the people who joined us had a future they could be proud of.

With over five decades in the industry, I feel proud to say that this legacy has been intact till date. We have many success stories that represent the growth, empowerment and resilience of our people.

Take Uvaise, for instance. When he joined us as an 18-year-old parcel boy, no one could have predicted the incredible journey ahead of him. But we saw his potential. By 2008, he was promoted to cashier, and within a year, he was given the responsibility of managing kitchen operations. It didn’t stop there—he climbed the ranks, becoming a branch manager and eventually a Cluster Branch Manager overseeing seven branches. Uvaise’s story reflects the opportunities we provide for those who are committed and driven to grow within our organization, both vertically and laterally.

Then there’s Nasar, or as we affectionately call him, Nasarka. Starting as a cashier, Nasarka’s curiosity and drive led him from the kitchen to the front of the house, where he excelled in customer service. His passion for football eventually led him to a new role—he now proudly represents one of our sub-brands as a coach for the Empire Football Club. It’s not just about food here; it’s about passion, and we’re here to help our people pursue theirs.

More such examples of this ethos. Khader, who rose to become our AVP-Operations, credits the supportive culture we foster—one that encourages growth and embraces calculated risks. Vaishag’s journey from housekeeping executive to General Manager of E-commerce shows how dedication, coupled with the right opportunities, can lead to extraordinary achievements. And Nadirsha, who joined us in 2002, now stands tall as our AVP of Finance, proving that passion and perseverance can unlock limitless potential.

These are just a few stories, but they are far from unique. Across our organization, there are countless Uvaises, Nasars, Khaders, and Nadirshas—each finding their own niche and nurturing their passion for our collective growth. With over 3,000 employees, we’re not just a team; we’re a community that thrives on shared success. When one of us grows, we all grow. That’s the way it’s always been, and that’s the way it will always be.

Innovation: The Core of F&B Evolution

Innovation: The Core of F&B Evolution 150 150 Shakir Haq

The food and beverage industry is driven by constant change, and staying ahead requires more than just adapting—it demands thoughtful innovation. But for us, innovation isn’t about flashy trends or one-time changes. It’s about efficiency, consistency, and scalability that drive real results. The question we continuously ask ourselves is: how can we deliver at speed while maintaining the highest standards?

We focus on streamlining processes to enhance both speed and consistency. By refining every step, from sourcing ingredients to preparing meals to serving our customers, we ensure that each step not only meets our high standards but is also done efficiently. This attention to process enables us to replicate success across our multiple outlets, ensuring quality and speed at scale.

We’ve implemented cloud kitchens to expand our reach and cater to a larger audience by establishing a presence in multiple locations. These kitchens are designed to optimize delivery operations, allowing us to serve more customers quickly and efficiently without compromising on quality.

It’s also about listening to our customers and understanding what they value most. Our approach to innovation is driven by the desire to enhance their experience in ways that matter. Whether it’s speeding up service times, improving menu options, or refining delivery processes, we are always seeking better, faster ways to meet their needs.

At the heart of our innovation strategy is a balance between modern efficiency and our deep-rooted values. While we embrace new ways of working, we remain grounded in the traditions that have shaped us since day one. This balance allows us to innovate without losing sight of what makes us unique—our commitment to quality and our deep connection to our customers.

Building a Lasting Legacy: The NKP Way

Building a Lasting Legacy: The NKP Way 150 150 Shakir Haq

The F&B industry is a crowded marketplace. Every day, new players enter the scene, promising unique experiences and tantalizing tastes. But amidst this clutter, how does one build a brand that not only survives but thrives?

At NKP Empire, we believe that a successful F&B brand is more than just a good product. It’s about building a deep connection with your customers, creating a culture that inspires, and having a clear vision for the future.

Know thyself

The first step to building a strong brand is understanding who you are. Your brand identity is your compass. It guides your decisions; from market selection to operational strategies. Over the years, NKP Empire has evolved, but our core identity has remained steadfast. This clarity has been instrumental in our journey.

Know your audience

Understanding your target market is paramount. It’s about more than just demographics. It’s about delving deep into their desires, their values, and their lifestyles. When you truly understand your customers, you can tailor your offerings to meet their exact needs.

Consistency is key

From the moment a customer interacts with your brand, whether it’s online, on social media, or in person, the experience should be seamless. Consistency in service, offerings and quality reinforces your identity and builds trust.

Elevate the experience

Great food is the foundation, but it’s the overall experience that keeps customers coming back. Every interaction, from the moment of knowing a brand to living it, should be memorable. It’s about creating an environment that complements your offerings, providing impeccable service, and going the extra mile.

Build a community

Customers are more than just patrons; they are part of your brand story. Their experiences shape your narrative, and their loyalty is the cornerstone of your success. To foster deeper connections, go beyond traditional interactions. Engage them on a personal level through social media by sharing behind-the scenes glimpses, responding to comments thoughtfully, and creating interactive content. Organize exclusive events that allow customers to connect with the people behind the brand, offering them a unique and memorable experience. Most importantly, actively seek and incorporate customer feedback. Their insights can be invaluable in shaping your menu, ambiance, and overall customer experience. By making them feel heard and valued, you’re building a loyal community that will not only return but also become passionate advocates for your brand.

Future-Proof your business

The F&B industry is dynamic. Staying ahead requires a clear vision for the future. At NKP Empire, our goal is to become a global food brand. This vision drives our strategic decisions, from building our brands to growth & expansion.

Invest in your people

Our employees are the heart and soul of our business. Investing in their growth, ensuring their well being, and empowering them to deliver exceptional service is crucial. A happy team translates into successful growth.

Building a profitable and preferred F&B brand is a marathon, not a sprint. It requires strategic planning, unwavering commitment, and a deep passion for the industry. By focusing on these key elements and staying true to your brand identity, you can create a legacy that stands the test of time.
